Brand Voice
- In a nutshell, our voice is: • Professional • Friendly • Engaging • Straightforward
- Our team is modeled after a company, where we need to be professional as much as we can. This means be helpful and straightforward. However, this does not mean act snobby or overly authoritative.
- Being friendly means to have a casual twist in our writing—that we don’t have to be serious all the time. You can put a joke here and there, and have shorter, simpler sentences. This does not mean be silly or sloppy with sentences. There’s a balance between serious and fun.
- Especially in social media, being engaged is very important. Relate to the person, and understand what’s going on around us in FIRST and our team. Respond and make conversations, and empathize one another.
- Above all, it is important to consider the reader’s state of mind. Once you have an idea of their emotional state, you can adjust your tone accordingly.
- When writing, be sure to: • Use active voice, and avoid passive voice Example: We’re committed to helping others through robotics. NOT: Helping others through robotics is our commitment.
- • Avoid slang, jargon, and clichés. Example: Last week’s barbecue was a huge success! NOT: Bruh, last week’s barbecue was so on fleek! I literally can’t even.
- • Write positively.
- • Focus your message, and create a hierarchy with information. Lead with the main point or the most important content.
- • Use well-known words.
- • Avoid run-on sentences.
- • Avoid double negatives (Example: Didn’t say nothing.)
- • Use specific examples.
- • Feel free to use contractions.
- • Preferably use the Oxford comma. Otherwise, use common sense.
- • When in doubt, read your writing out loud.

- Blade Runner is our logo typeface and is most recognizable to our team. Blade Runner may also be used as our team number on our robot.
- Make sure to use Blade Runner’s lowercase glyphs as some uppercase glyphs are different and does not stay consistent to our brand. Use this typeface only in our logo and as our team number.
- Blade Runner is available for free online to download and install.
- Steamwreck has been designated as the typeface for the 2017 season because of its steampunk-like design. Steamwreck should be used in all our materials relating to the 2017 season, including the 2017 robot name.

Tone And Messaging

- Because of Special Olympics Unified Robotics, the way you mention their audience is very important. Mention a student with a disability as a student with special needs or a student with intellectual disabilities, and not a special needs student.
- Captialize any team lead position whenever mentioned. “CEO” should be in all caps. Example: CEO, Engineering Team
- Titles should be in title case, meaning all words are capitalized, except conjuctions, articles, and prepositions. Avoid mentioning our team as “The CyberKnights.” Example: CyberKnights Partners with First Ever East African Robotics Team
- Mention the time periods as “AM” and “PM” with a space in between. Do not mention time as “o’clock.” Example: 10:00 AM.
- Mention dates without st, rd, or th. Example: January 1, 2017
- An alumnus is a male graduate, several are alumni. An alumna is a female graduate, several are alumnae. A mixed group is alumni.
- Some social media platforms have a character limit; others don’t. But for the most part, keep our social media copy short. • Facebook: No limit, but usually aim for one or two short sentences. • Twitter: 140 characters or less, aim less for pictures or videos. • Instagram: No limit, but aim for one or two short sentences.
- To write short, simplify your ideas and reduce the amount of information you’re sharing. However, don’t alter the spelling or punctuation of the words themselves. It’s fine to use the shorter version of some words, like “info” instead of “information.” Just don’t use numbers and letters in place of words, like “4” instead of “for” or “u” instead of “you”.
- Also, feel free to add emoji wherever it is appropriate, and a few hashtags. Just don’t go #overboard #with #them… #seriously.
